2000 Republican National Convention
Saturday, July 29, 2000 - Delegates and media arrived in Philadelphia on Friday and Saturday and navigated a maze of credentialing procedures,, hotel assignments and Secret Service checkpoints. The First Union center south of downtown Philadelphia was surrounded by a tent city that is serving as headquarters for some 15,000 journalists from across the world.
Many of those reporters attended a media party at the convention center on Saturday night that showcased the best Philadelphia restaurants. Following that first "official" activity, the media crowd took a guided tour around Independence Hall that featured a laser light show tracing the activities of Benjamin Franklin and the nation's founding fathers.
