Does Bush need your state to win?
2000 Republican National Convention
Sunday, July 30, 2000 - John McCain arrived in Philadelphia for the convention and promised he would be here to support the Bush campaign and the battle to keep the House of Representatives in Republican control.
However, McCain's first stop was not at an official convention activity, but rather at the "shadow convention" that features a variety of issue-oriented groups who are meeting in Philadelphia during the Republican convention and will also meet in Los Angeles during the Democrat convention.
However, when McCain announced his support for Bush, he was heckled by members of the audience who kept booing his remarks. McCain threatened to leave the event and then cut his remarks short and did not stay for the scheduled question-and-answer session.
"Keep fighting," McCain told the reform-minded students and activists gathered at the event before he left.

Meanwhile, a variety of protest groups gathered for an event called Unity 2000, that included a parade and speeches on issues ranging from abortion and the death penalty to animal rights. However, the parade and rally drew only a few thousand protestors, rather than the "tens of thousands" that organizers had predicted.
The day concluded with a lighted boat parade along the Delaware River and a large fireworks show as the City of Philadelphia officially kicked off the convention week on Sunday night. Adding to the excitement were "natural fireworks" as heavy storms moved through the city, causing flooding and leaving about 4,000 area residents without electricity.
