Does Bush need your state to win?

2000 Republican National Convention

Monday, July 31, 2000 - The American public got its first real look at the family of George W. Bush on Monday night as Laura Bush delivered a speech on the importance of education, parenting and support of the country's children.

Hitting the convention's daily theme of "Opportunity with a Purpose: Leave No Child Behind," Laura Bush highlighted her experience as a teacher and called for support of education initiatives such as teacher training and special programs to encourage reading.

Daughters Jenna and Barbara, who just completed high school, sat near President and Barbara Bush in the First Union Center... all beaming their support and providing millions of viewers with what may well be a Republican political dynasty. George W. Bush appeared by video from a campaign stop in Ohio and praised his wife as a woman of grace and also joked she is the family's best speaker.

Retired General Colin Powell followed Laura Bush with a passionate speech on the importance of making sure that leaving no child behind means providing safe, healthy and learning environments for all children... including children of all races and backgrounds.

He urged the Republican Party to reach out to black leaders... not just in election years... but as an on-going effort to rebuild the mantle of leadership that it claimed as the Party of Lincoln. And Powell strongly endorsed Bush as the leader who can make that happen.

Monday's convention opened with one of the top orders of business for the Republicans in 2000... keeping the House of Representatives... where control of the chamber will be decided by only six races.

The National Congressional Campaign Committee (NRCC) introduced its top candidates who each took a few seconds of valuable air time to outline their plans to create the winning margin. Among the candidates featured were:
Joan Johnson (NY-02), Dick Zimmer (NJ-12), Melissa Hart (PA-04), Jennifer Carroll (FL-03) and Mike Pence (IN-02).
