Does Bush need your state to win?

2000 Republican National Convention

Tuesday, August 1, 2000 - Strength and Security with A Purpose: Safe in our Homes and in the World. Restoring military morale and readiness has been a centerpiece of Governor Bush's defense policy. Conveying Governor Bush's message of strength and security were Condoleezza Rice, Elizabeth Dole and Senator John McCain. The evening also featured a tribute to former Republican Presidents and greetings from General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, who appeared via video screen from the deck of the Battleship New Jersey.

Rice, who has served with the National Security Council and was an expert on Soviet and Eastern European affairs, spoke highly of George W. Bush as a strong leader who understands the varied backgrounds of Americans and has the integrity to maintain peace through strength without compromise for political gain.

"George W. Bush will inspire us, because he understands who we are," she said. "He realizes that we are a nation that has been forged not from common blood, but from common purpose-- that the faces of America are the faces of the world."

McCain followed those remarks with a strong endorsement of Bush and a renewed call for putting personal interests aside for national interest. "I say to all Americans, Republican, Democrat or Independent, if you believe America deserves leaders with a purpose more ennobling than expediency and opportunism, then vote for Governor Bush," McCain urged.

Rick Lazio and New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani

Earlier in the day, Republican Senate Candidate Rick Lazio was joined by New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani for a quick press conference. Lazio said it felt good to be ahead in the current polls of his race against Hillary Clinton... but he warned there would be many ups and downs between now and Election Day.
