Does Bush need your state to win?

2000 Republican National Convention

Ford hospitalized...
Former President Gerald Ford was admitted to a Philadelphia hospital on Wednesday after being honored in a tribute to former presidents the evening before. Ford went to Hahnemann University hospital during the night complaining of sinus problems. He was given medication and released... but returned in the morning and was diagnosed as having suffered a mild stroke. The 87-year-old former president was in stable condition and is expected to be hospitalized for five days.

Bush arrives in PA...

George W. Bush, after campaigning in Ohio and West Virginia, joined Pennsylvania Governor Ridge at the State capital in Harrisburg before arriving in Philadelphia on Wednesday. In Harrisburg, Buash was introduced by the President of the American Legion and spoke to about 5,000 people. In keeping with the convention's daily theme he spoke about his desire to rebuild the military. After his remarks, which began about 45 minutes late, Governor and Mrs. Bush walked through the crowd for a time before saying "Let's get to work," ...for Bush that means delivering the convention's keynote speech on Thursday night.. -

Scrap the tax code...
Congressman Billy Tauzin and Majority Leader Dick Armey had the "Scrap the Code" debate at the Spectrum in the First Union Center. Tauzin and Armey debated the two leading alternatives to our current tax system. Congressman Tauzin supports the national retail sales tax and Congressman Armey supports the flat tax.

Under Congressman Tauzin's national retail sales tax plan, there would be no income tax. The IRS would be completely abolished. All federal tax income would come from a tax on sales. This plan allows each individual to decide how much taxes they are going to pay. The American people would be able to save and invest their money without being penalized.

Majority Leader Dick Armey proposes there be a flat-rate income tax that would treat all Americans the same. Under Armey's plan, there would be about a seventeen percent tax rate for all Americans. This plan destroys all loop holes of the tax code and doesn't favor special interest groups.

Congressman Tauzin and Armey have traveled around the nation for the past three years delivering this debate. They have made over thirty-eight appearances which have reached over 40,000 people. -Stephanie Chiasson

Protestors arrested...
Following several days of little attention to the various protests around the Republican National Convention, two women managed to capture some "earned" media time Tuesday by dressing as hookers and parading around the media tents, where some 15,000 reporters were waiting out a slow news afternoon. They were escorted off the property by Philadelphia police and convention officials.

Later in the day, police did arrest hundreds of protestors around downtown locations who were attempting to block intersections during rush hour and keep delegates from getting to the First Union Center for the convention's evening session.

Bush leads in new poll...
According to a recent Gallup poll, George Bush is currently leading Al Gore 50% to 39% among likely voters. By taking a lead among likely female voters and strengthening his lead among likely male voters Gov. Bush has created his largest lead of the campaign. If Pat Buchanan and Ralph Nader are not included, Bush leads Gore 54% to 40%. This recent upswing is attributed by many to the high publcity of his vice presidential selection process. If George Bush gets a 5% "bump" from the convention, a not unreasonable amount, he could enjoy a nearly 20% lead going into the Democratic Nation Convention begins. While victory would not be certain such a lead would put real pressure on the vice-president to shore up his party. Currently 92% of the Republicans surveyed report they would vote for Bush if the election were held today compared to 87% of the Democratic respondents who say they would vote for Gore. Bush has also successfully reached broader as well enjoying a 42% to 28% lead over Gore among independants. -
