Can Bush win the Electoral College?

2000 Republican National Convention

The 62-member Committee on Arrangements (COA), is responsible for managing the 2000 convention and handling tickets and badges, volunteers, family and youth, housing, special events, facilities, security, entertainment, news media, and transportation. For the first time, the committe has a technology subcommittee, reflecting the party's emphasis on harnessing new and emerging technology to expand its base and reach out to new voters.

"Our priority at this convention is to use technology in new ways so our nominee can reach as wide an audience as possible and so our party can broaden its base by reaching out to new voters," said Republican National Committee Chairman Jim Nicholson, who also chairs the COA.

Nicholson said that his choice of Philadelphia's First Union Center as the convention hall was influenced by the technological infrastructure of the $210 million, state-of-the-art sports arena.

"It is only fitting that in Philadelphia, where the first computer was developed at the University of Pennsylvania over fifty years ago, we are seizing on the emerging promise of 21st century technology to help nominate the first president of the new millennium," Nicholson said. He wryly added, "At this time, we cannot verify if Al Gore, the self-proclaimed 'founder of the Internet,' was in-state at the time."

Technological initiatives will include a vast expansion of the on-line convention presence. Convention organizers expect the 2000 convention web site to generate over 20 million hits a day compared to approximately 3 million per day in 1996. The PoliticalFest concept being developed by the Philadelphia 2000 Host Committee will feature interactive news, conversations, updates and exhibits about the convention.
